Students and staff convened at Columbia Middle School for a State of the District event highlighting recent facility updates, student leadership programs, and the Spartan Village classroom wing. Transportation improvements helped boost attendance while an expanded child nutrition program now provides at least one breakfast and two scratch-cooked lunch entrées daily, fresh produce, and more vegetarian options. Chronic absenteeism surged during the pandemic but has declined about 30% from its peak, remaining high for Latino, Black, and Indigenous students. The district faces a general fund shortfall starting 2024–25 and is pursuing deficit reductions and strategies to close achievement gaps.
