""I think that whenever we have the opportunity to volunteer, we should always take it up,""
""Also, I'm here with my friends, so it's a fun chance to do something nice.""
""Dr. King was just a great example of community service - national community as well as local community - and obviously fought for the rights of all peoples, and so we felt, on a smaller scale here on campus, how could our students reach out""
About 60 Saratoga High School students participated in four service-learning projects on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, contributing roughly 120 volunteer hours. Students prepared 20 lasagnas with Lasagna Love for families, shelters and community programs. Volunteers cut yarn to create wigs for children through the Magic Yarn Project and aimed to assemble 200 snack packs for Martha’s Kitchen to address food insecurity in Santa Clara County. Other students washed windows and repainted garbage and recycling containers to encourage proper sorting. School leaders from the Associated Student Body, PTSA, administration and activities staff organized the event; the school has participated since 2010. Ninth-grader Avani Vijay signed up for two Lasagna Love shifts, enjoyed learning to make lasagna and cited volunteering with friends as a motivating factor.
