However, by the 19th century, this model gradually gave way to a more structured education system defined by classrooms and strict schedules, known as the 'cells and bells' approach, marking a significant transformation in educational practices in the country.
The gurukul system, characterized by a learned guru imparting knowledge to disciples, represents an early form of education in India, emphasizing minimal and indirect instruction.
By the 19th century, the traditional gurukul had largely vanished, replaced by the structured ‘cells and bells’ model that dominated educational institutions in India.
