Racist Remarks Shock Participants at UWS Schools Meeting: 'We Take These Matters Very Seriously'
""They're too dumb to know they're in a bad school," the voice said. "If you train a Black person well enough, they'll know to use the back. You don't have to tell them anymore.""
""What you're saying is absolutely hearable here, you've got to stop.""
""I'm sorry sweetie, go ahead baby, I'm sorry,""
The Community Education Council for School District 3 and Department of Education staff held a hybrid February 10 meeting about possible relocation or closure of The Center School, The Riverside School for Makers and Artists, and the Community Action School. The meeting took place at the Joan of Arc school building and on Zoom with parents, students, and teachers. An eighth-grade student from the Community Action School spoke about not wanting to lose her school. During her remarks, an adult on the call made a racist comment referencing Black people and the back. Several participants showed shock and an organizer told the speaker to stop. The CEC posted the video and the New York City Department of Education responded.
