Prep talk: First-year coach Corey Kitani has Carson in City Section DII quarterfinals
"He's a good coach. He stands for the right things. He's going to develop kids. If he keeps the Carson kids at home, Carson can rise to be a power in the City."
"The every day grind, the discipline, accountability, sticking to the foundation you're trying to build."
Corey Kitani, 29, took over as head basketball coach at Carson High after nine years learning under his uncle, Harvey Kitani. The Colts compiled a 9-19 record but advanced to the City Section Division II quarterfinals and will play at Sylmar on Friday. Harvey Kitani spent 35 years at Fairfax and now coaches at Rolling Hills Prep, recently reaching his 1,000th career win; Corey is 991 wins away. Corey has been a P.E. teacher for six years and said the team only reached full strength in late January before earning wins over Narbonne and LACES. Harvey praised Corey for his values and player development, and Corey credited his uncle with teaching daily grind, discipline, accountability and sticking to a foundation.
