Edison High School offers a surfing class at River Jetties Beach in Newport Beach that begins at 6 a.m., allowing students to ride waves before attending academic classes. Jesse Rapp and Ryan Kliem were each named surfer of the year for boys and girls respectively in the Sunset Surf League. Edison won the overall league team title while competing against Marina, Newport Harbor, Huntington Beach, Fountain Valley, and Newport Beach Pacifica Christian. Rapp, who also plays guitar in a school band, values the surfing program for connecting with students from other schools and appreciates the positive way to start his day.
