"The announcement, which came during the Nov. 5 school board meeting, marked the second time this year the district has pushed the timeline for the mandate forward. The district had announced last spring that all incoming freshmen beginning this school year would have to take a P.E. class instead of a second elective, to comply with California education requirements. But the district reversed course in April after the announcement created confusion and some backlash from students and families,"
"Planning to accommodate more high school P.E. classes is expected to continue over the next few months, and BUSD Student Director Armana Aradom said she is working with the school board to ensure student perspectives on the issue are being heard. As a track athlete with daily practices, taking a P.E. class under the current bell schedule seems unnecessary and overly burdensome, Aradom said during the recent board meeting."
Berkeley Unified School District postponed implementing a required physical education class for ninth- and tenth-graders from 2026-27 to 2027-28. District officials cited insufficient staff capacity, financial and facilities constraints, and scheduling challenges as reasons for the delay. The mandate was initially announced last spring to comply with California education requirements and was reversed in April after confusion and backlash from students and families. Planning to accommodate increased P.E. enrollment will continue, including adding about 16 sections to the master schedule, providing P.E. to 571 freshmen, and hiring more than three full-time equivalent employees. The requirement may create conflicts for over 1,500 student-athletes and affect special education and work-study students.
