"For too long, schools and colleges have been forced to patch and mend buildings that have already deteriorated - spending their time worrying about leaking roofs instead of focusing on what matters most: giving every child the best possible education,"
"While this may require a great deal of work to fix, the quality of school buildings has a significant impact on pupils' learning and every child deserves to be taught in a safe, secure and fit for purpose school environment,"
Many school buildings in England remain ageing and fragile despite important progress removing reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (Raac), which prompted dozens of school closures in 2023. Raac, used in many buildings between the 1950s and 1990s, has a shorter estimated lifespan of around 30 years. Some schools still face closures, with pupils using marquees or modular buildings for lessons and breaks, disrupting learning and wellbeing. The government plans to remove all Raac or rebuild affected schools by the 2029 parliamentary term end and is launching a 10-year estate transformation plan backed by a 2.4 billion 2025/26 allocation. Significant gaps remain in information on the wider school estate.
