New fees, staff cuts: Berkeley school district now has an early plan to balance its budget
Berkeley Unified School District faced a $10.4 million budget deficit, with an earlier state proposal potentially reducing Proposition 98 funding by up to $7.8 million. After Gov. Gavin Newsom revised the state budget on May 14 following educator pushback, district leaders expected at least $2.7 million more in state revenue for 2026-27 than previously planned, including Prop 98 funds. The school board outlined an early balancing plan that would leave about an $843,000 cushion for next year. The plan relies on staff reductions, new transportation fees, and central-office cuts while avoiding the most severe classroom impacts and maintaining college preparation programs. It still includes cutting 21 non-teaching positions, including after-school coordinators and certain administrative roles. Additional costs may be shifted to longer-term funding sources such as the Berkeley Schools Excellence Program, with further details to be presented May 27.
"BUSD officials are still reviewing the details of the budgetbalancing plan, which aims to close a multiyear deficit without destabilizing classrooms, and an update will be presented at the board meeting next Wednesday, May 27."
