In 2018, Oakland Unified School District reduced the Oakland Athletic League budget by $500,000 to address a $30 million deficit by shutting down 10 high school sports. The cuts disproportionately affected girls, with 347 girls losing sports compared with 183 boys, and students learned of the changes shortly after summer break. Parents, represented by Legal Aid at Work, sent a letter the following month alleging Title IX violations requiring equal investment and nondiscrimination in educational institutions. Donors restored golf and tennis and lacrosse, and the Oakland Raiders contributed $250,000. By 2023–2024, Oakland Tech and Oakland High girls basketball teams won consecutive state championships, and in the current year Oakland Tech wrestler Shayna Ward won the district’s first girls wrestling state championship.
