Ministers are intensifying their school improvement programme to address regional disparities with an emphasis on transferring the successful practices from London to struggling areas. Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson noted that recent A-level results indicate widening achievement gaps, particularly highlighting stagnating performance in the Midlands and north-east. The Department for Education will expand the regional improvement for standards and excellence (Rise) programme to support more schools, offering expert help from experienced leaders and increasing funding to enhance educational outcomes in the affected regions.
Bridget Phillipson emphasized the importance of addressing the alarming achievement gaps between London students and those in regions like the north-east, stating, 'It's appalling that young people across the north-east... continue to be held back compared to their peers in London.' She firmly believes the school improvement plan will help bridge these gaps and uplift struggling schools.
The new approach aims to double the supported schools under the regional improvement for standards and excellence (Rise) programme, focusing on schools with persistent poor inspection reports and providing expert assistance and substantial funding.
