Twenty years ago, Park East High School faced closure due to poor math scores. Teacher Lauren Brady implemented small group instruction for at-risk students, ultimately achieving a 100% passing rate. Her innovative approach improved student outcomes and saved the school from closure. Over the years, Brady has received numerous accolades, including the Muller Award for Professional Influence in Education. She emphasizes questioning as a key teaching strategy, inspired by her high school teacher, Ms. Young, and has published work with the U.S. Census Bureau.
Brady suggested trying something different - small group instruction for students at risk of failing. She piloted the program, refining it over time. Those efforts resulted in a 100% passing rate.
Brady's approach continues to produce strong results, and Park East High School, in Manhattan's East Harlem, is no longer threatened with closure.
Brady credits her own teaching style to her favorite math teacher from high school, Ms. Young, for whom Brady acted as a 'teaching assistant.'
During small group instruction, questions are practically my only form of communication.
