How should AI be used in Berkeley schools?
"For some local educators and students, any guidance will come as a welcome development. With no outright ban or detailed policies issued by the district to date, teachers and students at Berkeley High told Berkeleyside the onus has been mostly on them to determine if, when, and how to use AI for school work. This story was written in partnership with the Berkeley High Jacket, the student newspaper of Berkeley High"
"While some teachers said they worry students will be under-prepared for college and the workforce if they don't adapt to the new technology, others voiced concerns about the potential harms of AI in education: more opportunity for cheating, less subject matter retention, impaired critical thinking, privacy concerns and environmental impacts. Meanwhile, students who spoke to Berkeleyside said AI can be a valuable study-buddy, but acknowledge the potential for it to be used irresponsibly."
Berkeley Unified is developing and adopting new guidelines and tools for artificial intelligence use in schools. No outright ban or detailed district policy currently exists, leaving teachers and students at Berkeley High to decide if, when, and how to use AI for school work. Some teachers worry that students will be under-prepared for college and the workforce without adapting to AI, while others cite increased cheating, reduced retention, impaired critical thinking, privacy risks, and environmental impacts. Many students view AI as a helpful study-buddy but acknowledge the risk of irresponsible use. Some teachers experiment with AI but generally approach it cautiously.
