How Mass Layoffs at the Education Dept. Affect Colleges
Briefly

The Department of Education's recent layoffs have severely impacted college financial aid operations, making it difficult for officers to assist students in retrieving their Federal Student Aid IDs promptly. Response times have extended from minutes to potentially weeks due to limited operational hours of help lines. At Northwest Career College, financial aid staff report increased frustrations among students facing roadblocks during the application process, particularly those with tight schedules. Overall, the workforce reduction has created significant challenges for both students and university staff in navigating financial aid applications efficiently.
When I have a student who's driven 30 minutes to get here and then we have this issue, I can't do anything. When they did this reduction, I don't think they thought about colleges on the west coast.
Difficulties applying for financial aid are just one of the many road bumps students and university staff across the country have faced since Education Secretary Linda McMahon and the Department of Government Efficiency cut the department down to just over 2,000 employees.
