"A vacant primary school in northeast London that closed due to falling pupil numbers could be reopened as a special educational needs (SEN) school for up to 48 children under new council plans. Some parents criticised the closure, saying it would fracture the school's thriving community of staff, pupils and families and a petition to save the school attracted more than 6,000 signatures."
Baden Powell Primary in Clapton closed in 2024 because of falling pupil numbers. The vacant building could reopen as a specialist SEN school offering 48 places as an expansion of Ickburgh School, with Ickburgh's main site on Kenworth Road remaining unchanged. Proposed works include refurbished classrooms, shared breakout areas, specialist art and food technology rooms, staff therapy spaces, new furnishings, new cladding, a shaded canopy and a new entrance. The statutory notice runs from 6 November to 3 December, with a council decision expected by year-end. Refurbishment could begin mid-2026 and pupils could be welcomed from September 2027. The project aims to reduce reliance on costly out-of-borough placements.
