"I told [the people complaining] at the time maybe it was associated with a Heritage month and to give the benefit of the doubt,"
"My hope is that this flag is taken down, and neutrality in the conflict in the Middle East is the message at Leaders High School."
"For five months, this flag has been a constant, political presence in this school's hallways, and it's impossible to ignore the message it's sending to the school's staff and children,"
"When we alerted school and district leadership to a clear violation of political neutrality regulations, they chose to ignore us. That's simply unacceptable."
A full-sized Palestinian flag has hung in a Leaders High School hallway in Gravesend since at least April, reportedly inside the Lafayette Educational Complex. The flag's origin is unclear. Moshe Spern, president of the 250-member United Jewish Teachers group, says Jewish staff, parents and students have complained and that the display violates Department of Education rules prohibiting political activities on school property. Spern emailed Principal Thomas Mullen twice requesting removal and demanded enforcement of neutrality rules. School and district leadership did not respond to the complaints, leaving Jewish stakeholders feeling uncomfortable and concerned about the flag's continued presence.
