Classrooms lean into analog learning in the AI era
At least 16 states, including both red and blue states, have introduced bills to limit classroom technology. Schools Beyond Screens grew from fewer than a dozen Los Angeles Unified School District parents to thousands of parents and educators nationwide. In Los Angeles Unified, the group helped pass a resolution limiting classroom screen time and eliminating school-issued devices for first grade and younger, with similar resolutions in New York City and Washington, D.C. At McPherson Middle School in Kansas, suspensions fell 70% after cellphones were banned in 2022, and further safeguards reduced discipline issues tied to Chromebooks. A grant allowed students to return Chromebooks after the school stored them in carts, and teachers are encouraged to use devices only when they enhance learning. The American Federation of Teachers released a 10-point plan to introduce AI and screen-time guardrails, including limiting AI use and banning screens for students in prekindergarten through second grade.
