The Oakland Press Box program helps 8th and 9th graders engage in writing by focusing on sports. Students will interview athletes and attend games, stimulating their interest in writing. This initiative is a collaboration between the Boys and Girls Clubs of Oakland and WriterCoach Connection, which has a history of mentoring students in writing. By integrating students' passion for sports, the program aims to make writing more approachable and useful for their future academic and professional endeavors.
Writing will give them the tools they need to apply to college, write cover letters for jobs, and excel in the workplace, empowering them to succeed in any career they choose.
By leveraging the students' excitement for one or more sports, the Oakland Press Box program will help ease the daunting task of writing.
The program is a joint effort of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Oakland (BGCO) and the nonprofit WriterCoach Connection.
Oakland Press Box is geared toward 8th and 9th graders at the Boys and Girls Club (Anna Marie Whalen Branch) on High Street in East Oakland.
