"The Australian Education Union (AEU) is recommending a 30.4 hour job-share model in state schools to expand working from home options for teachers, while keeping kids at school five days a week. The union has warned the government will need to get creative to ensure roles that can't be done from home are still appealing. Under the proposal, if you can reasonably do your job from home, you would have the right to do so for at least two days a week."
"AEU president Justin Mullaly said the union welcomed the arrangements that gave people guarantees around working from home, but noted the industry already had 900 vacant positions across the state. "It's clear that this will be more meaningful in some industries than in others, and of course, in education, particularly if you're a teacher, your job is to work in the classroom," he told The Herald Sun."
The Victorian teachers' union proposes trialling a four-day work week and recommends a 30.4-hour job-share model to expand work-from-home options while keeping students in school five days. The proposal would grant the right to work from home for at least two days weekly when a job can reasonably be done remotely. The union warned that the government must make non-remote school roles appealing, noting about 900 vacant positions across the state. The union emphasized that many teaching and student-facing non-teaching roles require on-site presence, and called for increased flexibility to accommodate varied duties.
