Virginia Beach Gives Residents $50 Free Parking Credit-and Raises Monthly Garage Rates
Virginia Beach residents can apply for an annual $50 Oceanfront parking credit through the HONK Mobile app. The credit applies at select Oceanfront garages, surface lots, and metered spaces along Atlantic Avenue from Rudee Loop to 38th Street. As of May 18, the city reported 11,961 applications, with 6,905 approved and 4,080 credits already claimed. Some applications were denied for missing documentation, and others remained under review. The city ended the old resident discount rate and raised monthly garage costs to $100 for unreserved and $150 for reserved parking. A seasonal municipal lot permit costs $100 per season. On-street parking now uses progressive pricing instead of a three-hour limit. The city states parking revenue funds operations, maintenance, and improvements without real estate or personal property tax support.
"Virginia Beach residents can now get $50 worth of free Oceanfront parking every year-but in exchange, the city has ended the old resident discount rate and raised monthly garage costs significantly."
"According to the city's Resident Parking Voucher Plan FAQ, any Virginia Beach resident-homeowners, renters, and active-duty military families alike-can apply for the annual $50 credit, which loads directly onto the HONK Mobile app and works at select Oceanfront garages, surface lots, and metered spaces along Atlantic Avenue from Rudee Loop to 38th Street."
"As of May 18, the city said it had received 11,961 applications for the program. Of those, 6,905 were approved and 4,080 residents have already claimed their credit. Another 3,153 were denied-usually for missing documentation-and 1,903 remain under review. If your application was denied, email parkinghelp@vbgov.com for further instructions."
"The city says the program is designed to balance affordability with financial sustainability: "Parking revenue pays for operations, maintenance and improvements without support from real estate or personal property taxes." Once your $50 credit runs out, you can purchase an additional $50 reload for $25. Any reloads after that cost the full $50."
