"Grocery Outlet appears to be opening a new store on a prominent corner of Oakland's popular Temescal neighborhood, as first reported by the San Francisco Chronicle (the Chronicle and SFGATE are both owned by Hearst but have separate newsrooms). The Emeryville-based discount grocery chain has applied for a liquor license at 5055 Telegraph Ave., according to records at the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control."
"The Telegraph Avenue store would not be Grocery Outlet's first in Oakland - the chain also has a location only 2 miles away at 2900 Broadway. It also has other East Bay locations in Alameda, San Leandro, San Lorenzo, Hayward, Richmond, San Pablo and more. The grocery chain has been expanding lately, particularly in the Eastern U.S., and opened more than 30 new stores last year."
"Temescal is experiencing a bit of a boom: Recent openings include pickleball social club Pickle Athletics and coffee shop Alleyway Cafe, while buzzy spots like "martini dive bar" Tallboy and natural wine bar Snail Bar continue to thrive. Still, the area is not immune to the challenges faced by the rest of Oakland: Beloved brewery Roses' Taproom shuttered in November after eight years, citing a decline in business."
Grocery Outlet has applied for a liquor license at 5055 Telegraph Ave. in Oakland's Temescal neighborhood and appears set to open a store in a former Walgreens space. A public notice was posted on the vacant storefront on Jan. 7. The new location would sit across the intersection from a Whole Foods at 5110 Telegraph Ave. and near Temescal Produce Market at 5121 Telegraph Ave. Grocery Outlet already operates an Oakland store at 2900 Broadway and multiple East Bay locations. The chain expanded rapidly last year, opening more than 30 new stores. Temescal has seen several recent openings and some closures amid mixed neighborhood economic conditions.
