"Current restrictions limit the leasing of property at Jack London Square, and so we can't have things like a grocery store, or a cafe,"
"I think that'll attract younger students, families, teenagers, and help spread the word about Jack London,"
"More jobs, more entertainment. People know of it everywhere and then people will come!"
"A lot of businesses have folded up and left. It's still so pretty. It's on the water. And I feel like the businesses here will expand if rezoned,"
Jack London Square remains underutilized more than five years after the pandemic, with over 50% of ground-floor space vacant. A new law taking effect next year will relax restrictions on Port of Oakland leasing, allowing businesses such as grocery stores and cafes to lease property at the square. The zoning relaxation is scheduled to last 40 years. A Dave & Buster's is expected to open in February and could increase foot traffic. Local residents report many businesses have closed and express hopes for more jobs, entertainment, and broader neighborhood revitalization. The Waterfront Hotel closure is expected to impact nearby businesses.
