Homeowners in Menlo Park fear that a neighbor's planned construction of an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) near redwood trees could destabilize the trees, which have shallow but wide root systems. Local resident Kelly Birmingham highlighted her concern about the risk to both trees and human safety. The city arborist's report expressed uncertainty regarding the survival of the trees if construction proceeds as planned. Birmingham and nearby residents have proposed building the ADU on a different side of the property to mitigate the risk.
I cannot state with any certainty whether or not the two trees closest to the property will survive this construction.
Kelly has come up with a proposed solution, suggesting the ADU be built on the other side of the property.
