Manufacturing boom in West Oakland aims to help the climate
""I know it doesn't look like it when you drive around, but there's a lot going on," said Lukas Hackl, co-founder and CEO of Aepnus Technology, one of the new companies, located on the Prescott Campus on Peralta Street. "You see a lot of warehouses and some of them still look empty.""
""Many of our customers spend a lot of money getting rid of their wastestreams," Hackl said. "Using our technology, we can hand back usable chemicals.""
""It's like a giant potato gun," he said, referring to a toy that uses air pressure to fire projectiles."
West Oakland's industrial corridor that suffered post-Loma Prieta decline is becoming a manufacturing hub focused on climate technology. Old factories and warehouses are being repurposed into turnkey R&D spaces by developer Joe Ernst in partnership with the City, creating benefits for both startups and residents. New companies concentrate on sustainable materials, clean energy, construction supplies and waste regeneration. Aepnus Technology converts battery and mining byproducts into reusable chemicals, reducing disposal costs and returning materials to manufacturers. Longshot Space Technologies develops a gas‑pressurized mass driver intended to launch satellites and cargo into space without conventional rockets.
