Future of beloved Bay Area pizza chain uncertain amid eviction fight
"Attorneys for the San Francisco mall filed an unlawful detainer lawsuit late last month, accusing Blondie's of owing Stonestown Galleria, which is owned by Brookfield Properties, more than $92,000 in past due rent. According to the lawsuit, the pizza institution stopped making monthly rent payments to Stonetown Galleria in October. The balance owed could be much higher. In December, Blondie's received a pay or quit notice, which Blondie's owner Abdul Zaloukh allegedly ignored."
"Blondie's Pizza has been a Bay Area staple and a favorite among UC Berkeley college students since 1980. The pizzeria was sold to Zaloukh, a longtime employee of Blondie's, in 2016, who briefly renamed the former chain Abe's Pizza, only to later switch it back to its original moniker. A single Abe's Pizza location continues to operate at 940 Market St. in San Francisco."
"The future for the Berkeley-born pizzeria, which continues to operate its original location on Telegraph Avenue, is uncertain amid the eviction proceedings. Zaloukh did not return multiple requests for comment, and employees at the Berkeley restaurant declined to comment. Brookfield Properties also declined comment. The San Francisco Standard reported that the Stonestown Galleria outpost remains open."
Blondie's Pizza's Stonestown Galleria location faces an unlawful detainer lawsuit from Stonestown Galleria, owned by Brookfield Properties, claiming more than $92,000 in past-due rent. Monthly rent payments allegedly stopped in October. A December pay-or-quit notice was reportedly ignored by owner Abdul Zaloukh, with lease forfeiture effective after Dec. 31, 2025, and an additional $606 charged per day for continued occupancy past that deadline. The Berkeley original on Telegraph Avenue remains open, but the Stonestown location's future is uncertain amid eviction proceedings. Blondie's opened mall outposts in 2022–2023, and at least one mall location has closed.
