Bay Area landmark where Monroe and DiMaggio celebrated wedding lists under $1M
"With its ornate rotunda and grand staircase, San Francisco City Hall is understandably a popular wedding location. But of all the ceremonies held there over the years, you'd be hard pressed to find a more chaotic one than the union that took place on Jan. 14, 1954. The site was mayhem that day as dozens of reporters jockeyed for a shot of the newlyweds, baseball legend Joe DiMaggio and idolized actor and model Marilyn Monroe."
"Instead of the champagne glitz of Hollywood, the couple stole away to a decidedly quieter location after saying their vows, hopping in the groom's boat and cutting across the bay to Martinez - more specifically, to the DiMaggio family home at 236 Buckley St. for a celebration safe from the peering eyes of the world. Now, that very home has hit the market for $979,000."
"It boasts nearly 1,000 additional square feet of bonus space in the basement and garage on the lower floor that can be transformed into office space, a studio or even an ADU. The kitchen has also been overhauled with a new center island, new stainless steel appliances and modern cabinets that are not out of place among the original built-ins."
San Francisco City Hall hosted a chaotic wedding for Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe on Jan. 14, 1954, with reporters swarming the newlyweds. The couple escaped by boat to the DiMaggio family home at 236 Buckley St. in Martinez for a private celebration. The 1928-built residence contains three bedrooms, three bathrooms and 1,596 square feet, and retains period features such as hardwood floors with inlays and built-in stained glass cabinetry. Renovations updated the kitchen with a center island and stainless-steel appliances while preserving 1920s-style tile. Nearly 1,000 square feet of basement and garage space offer conversion potential for office, studio or ADU use. A plaque on the front commemorates the reception.
