'This will help': Turkey giveaways, concert fundraisers aid Bay Area families this holiday season
""A turkey is one thing you want to be able to have, and to take it off my shopping list is the most precious gift I will ever get from a stranger," Moore said."
""We had to get on top of that ahead of schedule this year because of SNAP benefits not coming through. It's providing that need in these tough times, inflation, prices of groceries. Making sure people had an alternate plan if they needed help," said Uzo Nwadugbo, co-founder of The Black Neighborhood."
""Because a lot of families are in need of food, this will help them," Menifee said."
""Make some noise if you think people should not be hungry in the Bay Area," said rapper Frak."
With days before Thanksgiving, volunteers and nonprofits organized drive-thru turkey giveaways and meal kits across the Bay Area to assist families facing food insecurity. The Black Neighborhood in Richmond distributed 500 turkeys in its tenth annual giveaway, citing greater need after SNAP benefits paused during a government shutdown and rising grocery prices. Volunteers transported additional turkeys to community centers to reach more families. In San Francisco, musicians and hip-hop artists held a benefit concert called SNAP Back to raise funds for affected families. Recipients expressed gratitude, noting that receiving a turkey removed a significant burden from their holiday shopping list.
