This week in Oakland: Art Murmur's 20th anniversary, and the 'Winning and Losing' exhibit
Art Murmur’s 20th anniversary will showcase work from over 100 East Bay artists and include live music, art-making, food, and drinks. The event also features a community exhibit connected to East Bay Open Studios and serves as a kickoff for East Bay Open Studios 2026, which happens twice yearly. Spencer Hicks, a Berkeley-based artist, will present a solo exhibit titled “Winning and Losing,” featuring dozens of small works on paper. Clio’s Books will host earth scientist and author Dillon Osleger in conversation with Victoria Schlesinger about “Trail Work,” a book focused on political conflicts over public lands and the effects of disappearing trails on privatization and extraction.
"What started as an idea - to coordinate artists to showcase their work on the same night and invite people to just show up ended up transforming the East Bay Arts scene - In the two decades since its inception, Art Murmur's First Fridays has become a regular place for artists and art aficionados to gather every month. The anniversary party will include live music, art-making, food and drinks, and a community exhibit featuring the work of over 100 artists who participate in East Bay Open Studios."
"The event also kicks off the East Bay Open Studios 2026, a twice-yearly event during which artists across the East Bay open their studios to the public. Saturday, May 30, 11 a.m., free, RSVP online, 489 25th St."
"Clio's Books is hosting Dillon Osleger, an earth scientist and author of the new book "Trail Work: Restoring the Paths and Stories of America's Public Lands" ( Heyday Books), in conversation with Victoria Schlesinger, editor-in-chief of Bay Nature magazine. Osleger's book discusses the political fights over public lands and explores how the disappearance of more than two-thirds of U.S. trails from maps and memory has facilitated land privatization and extraction."
"A solo exhibit by Berkeley-based artist Spencer Hicks will feature dozens of small works on paper. Opening of Spencer Hicks' 'Winning and Losing' solo exhibit"
