Oakland Juneteenth festival opens with A.I-powered dinner celebrating Black heritage
Briefly

Hella Creative, a Bay Area BIPOC collective, is hosting its annual Hella Juneteenth festival in Oakland, emphasizing the future of food through its Futureproof Dinner. This five-course event, taking place on June 18, features distinguished Black chefs, including Nelson German and Michele McQueen, who will integrate artificial intelligence to create dishes that celebrate the African diaspora. Ryan Royster, from Last Supper Society, expresses the dinner's intent to merge Black heritage with a forward-looking perspective, showcasing the impact of Black voices and culinary creativity. The festival aims to elevate community narratives through innovative culinary experiences.
Being a part of dinners like these is really special to me because it allows me to show a different culinary side of my talent, allows me to do something very different than what I'm serving at the restaurant, and showcases a different side of me, McQueen said.
According to Ryan Royster, co-founder of the Last Supper Society, the dinner will not only be a celebration of heritage, but a culinary time machine that will take diners on a journey through Black history and end with a hopeful future shaped by the legacy, ingenuity and creative force of Black voices.
