Amid nationwide closures, Grocery Outlet bets on Bay Area with new store
"It's clear now that we expanded too quickly, and these closures are a direct correction. We continue to plan to open another 30 to 33 net new stores in 2026, but they do reflect a more disciplined approach."
"The discount grocery retailer has signed a lease at 301 E. 18th St. in the Eastlake neighborhood of Oakland, a Grocery Outlet spokesperson confirmed. The site, a former Walgreens that shuttered in February 2025, is near the corner of East 18th Street and Third Avenue, less than 500 feet from a Lucky supermarket."
Grocery Outlet, headquartered in Emeryville, is closing 36 financially underperforming supermarkets across the country, including nine in Southern and Central California, due to overly aggressive expansion. However, the company is simultaneously growing in the Bay Area by signing a lease for a new store in Oakland's Eastlake neighborhood at a former Walgreens location near Lake Merritt, expected to open in late 2026. CEO Jason Potter acknowledged the company expanded too quickly and cited a more disciplined approach going forward, with plans to open 30 to 33 net new stores in 2026. The company reported a $221.7 million operating loss for 2025.
