Berkeleyside and East Bay Nosh have welcomed three summer interns—Daniel Ekonde, Sara Martin, and Skylla Mumana—all students from UC Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism. The organization emphasizes mentorship and practical experience to empower aspiring journalists. During their initial weeks, Ekonde has covered diverse local issues, from environmental concerns to civic protests, while Martin highlighted community events and policy changes. Mumana reported on local food business trends, showcasing their skills and commitment to addressing vital community topics. This initiative reflects Berkeleyside's dedication to fostering journalism talent amid industry challenges.
‘I spent the first seven years of my career calling out sporting events on radio and TV in Cameroon,’ Ekonde said. ‘In between, I wrote online stories, which spurred a passion for writing, and today I'm happy to go through an immersive narrative experience at Berkeleyside.’
‘I’m excited to work at Berkeleyside and bring attention to local issues, especially around the parks and public spaces! I believe storytelling is essential for community.’ said Sara Martin.
