Berkeley Farmers Markets began a redesign in August to comply with 2016 state fire regulations requiring wider lanes for fire trucks, 40-foot clearances between parked vehicles and vendor tents, and 20-foot clearances for generators. The Berkeley Fire Department notified the Ecology Center of noncompliance in late 2024, and the Ecology Center worked with the department through the first half of 2025 to develop solutions. The Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday markets adopted layouts that place tents on one side and vendor vehicles on the other. The Tuesday and Saturday markets implemented changes first; the Thursday market implemented the redesign on Aug. 21, and vendors adjusted logistics while remaining on-site.
There isn't additional parking in these areas, so if they can't park next to their tents, where can they park? There was really a lot of back and forth with the city.
Traditionally, the farmers park their trucks or vans right next to the tent to make unloading and operations easier,
