Training today's Oakland high schoolers to be tomorrow's EMTs, nursing assistants and ER workers
Briefly

Oakland Unified's Highway to Work places recent high school graduates into health care roles across Bay Area emergency rooms, nursing facilities, and ambulance services within a year of graduation. The four-year-old, district-run internship offers pathways as emergency medical technician, certified nursing assistant, or emergency room technician. Interns earn up to $3,000 over the summer and receive coverage for certification test fees. The program expanded by 30 graduates this summer. Funding comes from the Haas Family Foundation and a California Employment Development Department grant. Participants gain medical training, patient care, and emergency response experience while pursuing further education or employment.
