This week in Oakland: Ice Cube at the arena and the 'Stoked' exhibit
"This week, we are showcasing literary and art events, such as the open house at The Bookmark Bookstore to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Friends of the Oakland Public Library. Also, I highly recommend the exhibit of wood-fired ceramics, "Stoked." And, since fall has officially started, don't forget to check out our Fall Events roundup so you don't miss out on the events coming to The Town beginning this month."
"Scott Parady, the director of Cobb Mountain Art and Ecology Project and Ceramic Faculty at California State University, Sacramento, curated "Stoked," an exhibit featuring the wood-fired ceramics of more than 36 artists from around the United States. The exhibit, housed in the June Steingart Art Gallery in the lobby of the Laney Tower, runs through Dec. 5. Monday and Wednesday, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, 11 a.m to 2 p.m., 900 Fallon St."
"Author and poet J.R. Rice is hosting a free open mic series at West Oakland's Discover Community Cafe, which, since opening in April, has hosted various community events, including game nights, art workshops, clothing swaps, and more. The event is open to any poet, musician, comedian, or storyteller, who will have the opportunity to perform two pieces (poems, songs, etc.) for no more than 10 minutes. Friday, Sept. 26, 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., free, 3207 Louise St."
Oakland's fall calendar features a June Steingart Gallery exhibit, community open mic nights, and a library supporters' 75th-anniversary open house. 'Stoked' showcases wood-fired ceramics by more than 36 artists, curated by Scott Parady, and runs through Dec. 5 in the June Steingart Art Gallery at Laney Tower, 900 Fallon St., with specified weekday hours. Discover Community Cafe hosts a free Get-Hype open-mic on Sept. 26, organized by author J.R. Rice, welcoming poets, musicians, comedians, and storytellers for two pieces up to 10 minutes.
