"Californians have come to expect severe wildfire seasons year after year, but according to Oakland Fire Chief Damon Covington, this year's fire season has been manageable so far. While California's mutual aid system means the department currently has one Oakland fire engine deployed to lend support at the Blue Fire in Siskiyou County, the East Bay has been spared the more intense fires that have been seen throughout the state."
"On top of a moderate fire season, Covington said the Oakland Fire Department is operating "at full capacity for the first time in over two decades," thanks to the reopening of three fire stations. Those three stations, two of them located in the Oakland hills, reopened in May after being temporarily shut down for months, and in one case for years, due to budget constraints."
Measure MM, a local special tax for residents in Oakland's Wildfire Prevention Zone, will fund vegetation management. Oakland's fire season has been manageable so far despite an extremely busy statewide season. One Oakland engine is deployed to support the Blue Fire in Siskiyou County under California's mutual aid system. Three fire stations, two in the Oakland hills, reopened in May after closures caused by budget constraints. The reopenings were funded by the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum Authority. The Oakland Fire Department is operating at full capacity for the first time in over two decades. The Wildfire Prevention Zone includes over 20,000 parcels inside Cal Fire's Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone.
