The Mam community in Oakland, notably represented by students at Skyline High School, embarked on a journey to compile their history into a book titled 'Mam History: Oakland Notes on the History of the Mayan-Mam Language.' Guided by their teacher, Javier Armas, students Miguel Ortiz and another Mam speaker learned about their ancestry beyond what was taught in school. The project involved extensive interviews and research, emphasizing the importance of Mam speakers as trilingual advocates who connect with elders and share their vibrant culture and language.
Creating the book 'Mam History: Oakland Notes on the History of the Mayan-Mam Language' involved months of interviews, research, and detailed collaboration with our tight-knit Mam community.
Being a Mam speaker means being trilingual, not just in Mam and English, but also in Spanish to connect with local Latino resources and community.
