Project could open thousands of acres in Bay Area to oil and gas drilling
""The Trump administration is targeting what they're calling energy dominance, and that mostly means, 'just drill, baby, drill,'" said Cooper Kass, an attorney with the Center for Biological Diversity. "And then within that, there's also the Trump administration's disdain for California, and that's shown with these two plans as well.""
"Mineral estate acreage includes underground resources like oil, coal and minerals. Though leasing out mineral estate would not change the ownership of land at the surface, accessing its resources would require drilling into the earth above it, Kass said."
The Bureau of Land Management plans to lease over a million acres of federal mineral estate in California for oil and gas drilling. This initiative is part of an effort to implement President Trump's energy policies. The proposed drilling could affect approximately 680,000 acres in several counties, including Alameda and Santa Clara, and over 1.2 million acres in the Central Valley. Public response has been strong, with over 175,000 comments submitted expressing concern about the environmental impact of these projects.
