"I thought it would be important for somebody to have a moment, after experiencing so much, to get a second to reflect and write and get some of those emotions out,"

The Black Panther Party Museum's exhibit "Happy Heavenly Birthday Oscar" honors Oscar Grant's childhood and life, on display through Feb. 28, marking what would have been his 40th birthday. The installation features a framed handwritten letter from his mother, Rev. Wanda Jackson, reflecting on his last moments and expressing pride. The exhibit includes never-before-seen photos, voice messages, sound elements, and the 2014 short film "Happy Birthday Oscar." A mural of Grant now adorns Fruitvale Station, and annual New Year's Day vigils and rallies at the station commemorate his life. An interactive station invites visitors to write birthday cards to Grant to help keep his memory alive and connect through shared grief.
