"William Smith, who lives on Tyrell, showed us a bent car rim, which he said had all been damaged by the street's potholes just in the last three weeks. He said he's also punctured two of his tires on the road. "So I drive extremely slow and cautious," he said. "Sometimes I'll choose not to leave, seriously, just because this street is so bad. I only use it when I have to. It's terrible.""
"The assessment survey data we obtained was conducted between September and December 2024, so some roads have been fixed since then. But as the Department of Transportation waited for Measure U bonds to be put up for sale, little paving moved forward in 2025. Oakland's Transportation Department told us that 18.6 miles of road have been paved in the last calendar year, up to now, or about 2.2% of the total, but the city didn't give us a list of which ones."
Oakland's road network shows extensive deterioration, with two streets—Tyrell Street (Courtland to 47th) and Woodcliff Court (Malcolm Avenue to north end)—tied as the worst. Assessors identified 871 stretches with zero years of life remaining. A resident on Tyrell reported recent rim damage and two punctured tires, and described driving extremely slowly or avoiding leaving home because of the damage. The city repaved about 230 miles from June 2019 to June 2025, roughly double the previous decade's rate. The pavement survey was conducted September–December 2024, and 18.6 miles were paved in the last calendar year while Measure U bonds awaited sale.
