Floyd Mitchell submitted his resignation to the city of Oakland, with his final day scheduled for Dec. 5. Mitchell began as chief in May 2024 after appointment by former Mayor Sheng Thao. No reason for the resignation was made public. Mayor Barbara Lee and City Administrator Jestin Johnson will collaborate to name an interim police chief. City officials credited significant reductions in crime during Mitchell's tenure while noting the declines mirror national trends. Mitchell previously led Lubbock and Temple police departments, spent 25 years in Kansas City policing, and is an Air Force veteran. He revised OPD vehicle pursuit policy.
