""Frank was very successful at defending his clients and he was very outspoken about the corruption that he believed existed in Modesto's law enforcement, so he became the victim of a witch hunt," said Gwilliam, who is the founding partner at Gwilliam Ivary Chiosso Cavalli & Brewer. "It's a frightening story, because if that could happen to someone as well connected as Frank, you can imagine what's happening to the people who aren't so well connected.""
"A decade after Carson's arrest, and six years after he and his fellow defendants were fully acquitted by a jury, Stanislaus County finally agreed this past April to pay $22.5 million to Carson and seven other individuals for violations of their civil rights. Justice was served - but it came too late for Frank Carson. In a recent interview, Gwilliam shared the details of this tragic case of a government agency exacting revenge and ruining lives."
Frank Carson was a decorated criminal defense attorney and outspoken critic of the Stanislaus County District Attorney's Office who was accused in August 2015 of conspiring to murder a young methamphetamine addict. Carson, his wife Georgia DeFilippo, his stepdaughter Christina DeFilippo, three Highway Patrol officers and two local businessmen were arrested in a case centered on the 2013 death of Korey Kauffman. Doubts about the allegations emerged early. Carson and the co-defendants were fully acquitted by a jury six years later. In April, Stanislaus County agreed to pay $22.5 million to Carson and seven others for civil rights violations, but the settlement arrived too late for Carson.
