Oakland gets $33 million for supportive housing on 35th Ave.
"Mayor Barbara Lee called the $33 million award from the state a "proud moment" for the city."
""With the Mark Twain Homes project, we're adding 109 affordable housing units that will provide stability and dignity for Oaklanders who have experienced or are at risk of experiencing homelessness," Lee said in a statement last week."
California awarded $33 million from the Homekey program to redevelop the Mark Twain Homes site at 35th and Lyon avenues in East Oakland into 109 supportive apartments. The project will rebuild one deteriorated building and renovate three others to provide permanent supportive housing with communal space, on-site social services, and a computer room. The city previously contributed $13 million. Berkeley-based Memar Properties will develop and manage the property and the Housing Consortium of the East Bay will deliver services. Homekey was launched during the COVID-19 pandemic to rapidly convert existing buildings into supportive housing; this is Oakland's 11th award.
