Oakland artist Kehlani wins first Grammys and calls out ICE
""I hope everybody's inspired to join together as a community of artists and speak out against what's going on, and I'mma leave this and say "Fuck ICE,"" they said."
""We're too powerful of a group to all be in a room at the same time and not make some kind of a statement in our country," she told the Hollywood Reporter."
""You could have done whatever you wanted in your 20s, but instead you chose to take care of me, to put me in all the programs and all the things that would feed who I am today; so mommy I owe you everything," they said."
Kehlani, a 30-year-old Oakland artist known for neo-soul and hip-hop, won the first two Grammys of their career, including Best R&B Performance and Best R&B Song for "Folded." Kehlani used acceptance speeches and the red carpet to publicly condemn Immigration and Customs Enforcement, explicitly saying "Fuck ICE" and wearing a Valdrin Sahiti gown with a white "ICE out" pin. The pin was part of the Be Good–ICE Out campaign honoring Americans harmed by ICE and was also worn by artists such as Joni Mitchell, Carole King, Olivia Rodrigo, Becky G, Brandi Carlile, Finneas, and Billie Eilish. Kehlani thanked their mother for adopting and supporting them and previously performed in high school with the band Poplyfe under the name Kehlani Parrish.
