An Alameda County judge ruled Cedric Irving Jr. mentally incompetent to stand trial for the murder of John Beam. The case was suspended in January for psychological evaluations. Irving may be committed to the California Department of State Hospitals. Beam, a respected figure in the community, was shot on November 13, 2025, at Laney College and died the next day. Irving was arrested with the firearm used in the shooting and admitted to the crime. The next court date is scheduled for May 8.
