The East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) plans to raise water rates by 13% and wastewater rates by 17% over two years. This is necessary to update over a century-old infrastructure and invest in new water treatment facilities. The proposed rate increase, starting in July, will amount to an additional $8 on average water bills and over $4 for wastewater. EBMUD's extensive plan includes $1.2 billion for infrastructure improvements over the next two years, part of a larger $5.6 billion investment in upcoming decades to ensure a reliable and resilient water system.
