Former director of Oakland youth boxing program charged with embezzlement
Briefly

Howard Solomon, former executive director of the East Oakland Boxing Association, has been arraigned in federal court on charges including mail fraud and tax evasion. Prosecutors allege he embezzled funds from the nonprofit, using its resources for personal expenses, including Amazon purchases, luxury car payments, and even a vacation rental. Notably, he is accused of pocketing a $50,000 donation from Steph and Ayesha Curry. The boxing association, founded in 1987 to support disadvantaged youth, continues to uphold its mission despite the troubling allegations, as expressed by interim director Dawna Williams.
Solomon allegedly transferred money out of the group's bank accounts into various accounts only he had access to and purchased over $100,000 in personal items from Amazon using the association's debit cards.
Prosecutors also claim he used boxing association funds to pay for a vacation rental and a Cadillac Escalade.
Solomon has pleaded not guilty to the charges. His attorney, Randy Sue Pollock, declined to comment on the case.
Dawna Williams, the boxing association's interim executive director, said the news is upsetting. "We're reeling but resilient," she said.
