Exhibit chronicles four generations of a Sunnyvale orchard family
"Where multi-story apartment buildings are now being constructed once stood the Butcher family orchard. The farm had been in the family since 1881, when Rolla and Emma Butcher bought 160 acres of land. After Rolla's early death, Emma ran the farm by herself, planting fruit trees while raising her young children."
"A new exhibition at the Sunnyvale Heritage Park Museum displays artifacts from several generations of the Butcher family, as well as items from everyday life such as kitchen and farm tools, interior fixtures, china dishes and glassware. Photographs of the farm and family portraits accompany the display."
The Butcher family orchard, established in 1881 by Rolla and Emma Butcher on 160 acres, operated for over 130 years in Sunnyvale until 2013. After Rolla's death, Emma managed the farm independently while raising children and planting fruit trees. Her descendants continued orchard operations across generations. The Sunnyvale Heritage Park Museum now displays a comprehensive exhibition featuring artifacts from multiple generations of the Butcher family, including farm tools, kitchen implements, china, glassware, and family photographs. The exhibition runs until late April at 570 E. Remington Drive, open Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from noon to 4 p.m. with free admission.
