Diaper bank expands in Alameda County for those in need
Briefly

A $5.8 million initiative in Alameda County aims to distribute 15 million diapers and 37 million baby wipes to address rising childcare costs. Local nonprofits, led by SupplyBank, are partnering with First 5 to implement one of the largest diaper banks in the U.S. The initiative responds to increased diaper costs, rising 35% since 2019. It is expected to assist an estimated 10,000 families over three years, distributing supplies via community-based organizations in various local centers. This comprehensive approach highlights the challenges low-income families face in affording basic necessities.
The cost of diapers has increased substantially more than the inflation that we've had over the last several years, said Benito Delgado-Olsen, executive director of the Oakland nonprofit SupplyBank.
In 2015, we started to lean into diapers just recognize them as part of the high cost of living in the Bay Area, said Kristin Spanos, CEO of First 5 Alameda County.
The success of several pilot programs in recent years has led to the program's expansion, where community-based organizations will distribute diapers and wipes at various centers.
Estimates from First 5 suggest that 10,000 Alameda County families could receive assistance through the program over the next three years.
