Berkeley police, along with public works staff, initiated the removal of tents and makeshift structures from a longstanding homeless encampment in Northwest Berkeley on Wednesday morning. The operation involved heavy machinery to dismantle larger shelters as police cordoned off sections of Harrison and Eighth Streets. The removals came after a temporary restraining order preventing such actions expired last month, despite ongoing legal challenges from homeless advocates. Nearby businesses and residents have also filed a lawsuit to encourage the city's actions against the camp.
Police cordoned off roughly two blocks of Harrison Street and two blocks of Eighth Street during the operation.
A temporary restraining order that for months had barred the city from removing the camp expired last month.
