The fire ignited approximately 400 feet within the tunnel, leading to halted traffic in both Bore 1 and Bore 2 for safety reasons while fire crews responded. The Oakland Fire Department successfully extinguished the flames by 4:55 p.m., and although Bore 2 reopened by 6:30 p.m., Bore 1 remained closed without an estimated reopening time, prompting the CHP to advise alternate routes for travelers.

The blaze was extinguished by 4:55 p.m., but while crews worked on the scene, all traffic was stopped in Bore 1 and Bore 2.
Despite the serious situation with the fire, the driver of the car that caught fire and a passenger were unharmed and helped by another motorist.
As of 6:30 p.m., Bore 2 was reopened, but Bore 1 remained closed with no estimated time for reopening.
